Why Don’t More Men Sing in Choirs?

Men singing in choirs

In Britain, men have no problem singing at football matches, in pubs after a pint, or belting out “Sweet Caroline” at a wedding. Yet when it comes to joining a choir, it can feel like pulling teeth to get men through the door.

And maybe part of the problem is the word itself. “Choir” can sound formal or intimidating – maybe it brings to mind robes, hymn books, auditions, or the idea that you need to sing like Pavarotti. No wonder some blokes think, “that’s not for me.”

But the reality is very different. Groups like All For One are less like a traditional choir and more like a community singing group – a bunch of mates coming together once a week to sing great songs, laugh, and leave the stress of the day behind. You don’t need to read music, you don’t need a trained voice, and you certainly don’t need to be the next Tom Jones. If you can sing along in the shower or at the match, you’re good enough.

And there’s more to it than just the fun. Singing is proven to reduce stress, boost mental health, improve breathing, and release endorphins – it’s basically a natural high that can last for days.

It also doesn’t matter if you’re 18 or 80, whether you’ve sung before or not – everyone fits in, and everyone has something to add. Once men give it a go, the benefits speak for themselves…

“I was welcomed with open arms – perhaps not so much for my singing ability, but more because the predominantly female choir was crying out for more blokes!”John Condon

“The sense of joy and togetherness has been so uplifting. Me and Shirley have made so many new friends… This is one of the best things to have ever happened in my life.”Terry Green

“Every time I sing with AFO I feel VERY happy and uplifted. This feeling can last for days afterwards.”Dave Emberson

“I only joined the choir because I was dropping off my wife and got dragged in – but the truth is, I have never looked back.”John Mather

“Musically I have learned so many things… a Choir is better than the sum of its parts. You do not have to sing like Robbie Williams or Michael Ball – just merge your voice with others. Together, we create something beautiful.”Neil Bowerman

“You may not consider yourself a Tom Jones – but collectively? Maybe!”Alan Coulbeck

“Joining this mixed community choir has been life-changing. The thrill of singing together and performing is simply magnificent. If you’re a man considering joining, don’t hesitate.”Chris Sanders

“As a bloke, you might not think a choir is your thing. But no auditions, no judgement, no pressure – just good music, big laughs, and a great bunch of lads in the men’s section. Since joining, I’ve sung in competitions, performed at huge venues, and made lifelong friends. Choir resets me every week.”Connor Ferguson
